Evolution: A Threat to Human Exceptionalism or a New Interpretation of Human Superiority?

This study aims to provide a rigorous and systematic analysis of the relationship between evolutionary theory and the concept of human exceptionalism. It undertakes a semantic exploration of the notion of exceptionalism and delineates its essential components, while critically assessing the impact of core principles of evolutionary biology—including common descent, gradual acquisition of complex traits, species fluidity, the dissolution of human-animal boundaries, and the characterization of humans as products of nature—on various conceptualizations of human superiority over other species. The research method employed in this paper is descriptive-analytical, which, by analyzing concepts, propositions, and arguments presented in various theories, aims to uncover the relationship between evolution and human superiority.

The paper argues that, although certain traditional conceptions of human exceptionalism face significant challenges in light of evolutionary findings, alternative and evolution-compatible forms of exceptionalism remain tenable. These include: natural exceptionalism (relative superiority in natural capacities), metaphysical or theological exceptionalism (rooted in transcendental or religious claims), and volitional or acquired exceptionalism (based on the cultivation of superior traits through intentional development).

Rejecting any misuse of the concept of exceptionalism as a justification for environmental exploitation, this study emphasizes the importance of understanding the human place within the intricate web of life, informed by both evolutionary insights and the multifaceted dimensions of human distinctiveness.
